The Snow Grinch

Central Park in the snow

I’ve never been a big fan of snow. I don’t ski nor snowboard (God forbid), and the shoveling and travel hazards have been exhausting and scary. On the surface, snow is fraught with trials and tribulations. Walking my dog in the snow has resulted in several butt surfing episodes that are ever more daunting in my 60s. He looks at me after a slip and fall as if to say, “And you think it’s smart to walk on two legs?!” But even I, The Snow Grinch, have come to appreciate a few things about the white stuff.

When the light hits new snow, there are myriads of tiny reflections coming from each of the trillions of flakes. If you look really closely you can see the unique hexagonal forms comprising the mass of white. Sort of like we humans who resemble a crowd at first glance, then each having a complex tangle of DNA and experiences that make us incredibly unique while being “one.”

I was wondering why a “White Christmas” is particularly appealing. Maybe it’s an excuse to stay put, not run around from mall to party, back to mall? At this time of year, the inner longing for time with ourselves is drowned out by the need to look engaged and celebratory. We reject our own company and then try to make up for that rejection by being invited and accepted by others. Yet, because the true need is for an inner peace we can be left exhausted and depressed. We make the classic error of searching “out there” for what is only available “in here.”

Rosanne, The Snow Grinch then dug a little deeper…

I came up with a vision of the silent blanket of white frosting on every surface quieting the outer noise. Snow creates the stillness and the repose of every living thing. I saw in my mind’s eye the emphatic white articulation of branches and bushes, rooftops and fences. Stillness and quiet.

The holidays at this time of year all seem to celebrate light in the darkness, charity and universal love, self-accountability and purification. These objectives seem to invite us in as well as “out.”

We humans tend to be noise makers. We create explosions, blow horns and holler at midnight of a New Year dawning, play loud music and seem to create lots of movement. We build hard surfaces that amplify noise and interfere with the calming of sound and energy. We talk too much and say too little. We tend to dread stillness because it exposes what is unfinished within us. Much of what is communicated through love comes in quiet moments.

I still don’t particularly look forward to Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride on snowy roads, but I will wish you a “White Christmas” with or without snow. If there is no snow, no literal outer blanket of stillness to embrace you, may you find it within yourself. May the “still, quiet voice” whisper that all is well and may we all “sleep [and live] in heavenly peace.”

Much love, Rosanne (aka, “The Snow Grinch”)

Easily Letting Go

The image of Mary holding the crucified body of her Son is a riveting metaphor. The Pieta sculpture is mesmerizing because it represents the ability to love that which appears hopelessly damaged. But the other side of the coin is Life Everlasting in the Resurrection.   I was thinking about our fragility and how worthy…

Who convinced us that we’re the superior species? And who said subjective thinking was all that and a bag of chips!? The Buddhists say that the thinking mind is most functional when it’s the servant of consciousness and does a really poor job when our thoughts rule us. Observing the rationale these days exhibited by…

The Shadow of Memories

By Rosanne Bostonian | December 27, 2023

I like Antiques Roadshow, except when an episode spontaneously appears in my closet. I have clothes from every size and stage of my life. This is partially because I hate clothes shopping. Whoever designed the fitting rooms with their obviously distorted mirrors and brassy lighting has a sadistic side. Don’t even start me on bathing…

Sitting with our Fears

By Rosanne Bostonian | November 14, 2023

As many of you are, I am a seeker of Truth as It expresses Itself in this world we mistakenly call reality. That was a mouthful! What I know from studies in psychology and spiritual study is that layers of what we think we know, what we think is “me” gradually peel off and leave…

For Love of Teaching

By Rosanne Bostonian | September 10, 2023

I remember being in the back of a classroom as a student teacher. I watched the master teacher while looking at the backs of my students. When it was my turn to step up to the podium, it was a shock. They were all looking at me. They were waiting and nothing would happen until…

For the Love of Life (Just as it Is)

By Rosanne Bostonian | July 5, 2023

We humans have a conditional love of Life. We love Life when nice things are happening. We love Life when we are showered with our hearts’ desires. We seem to believe that we are entitled to Life as WE define it, without hurts, troubles, mistakes and other unpleasant “surprises.” When Life deals out its challenges,…

Religious v. Spiritual

By Rosanne Bostonian | May 23, 2023

I’ve been asked a number of times about the difference between religion and spirituality.  Since there are increasing numbers of people that claim to be spiritual, but not religious, it’s a valid question. The way I think about this is that religion is a road map, a set of directions that keeps us on course,…

Mystery Abounds

By Rosanne Bostonian | May 7, 2023

There is nothing new in the world, just the echo of wisdom stated and restated in a variety of traditions and languages. What is there about our thinking brains that prevents us from yielding to truths greater than those known in our very small, individual lives? No doubt that what we see and hear enters…

That’s the way life is, so that’s the way I am

By Rosanne Bostonian | April 24, 2023

With our big brains and learning capacities, we figure out the way life is. Once we’ve established the way life is, we attribute our feelings, our relationships, and our sensibilities accordingly. There is a surrender to the way life was and it automatically becomes the way life is and will always be.  A simpler…

The Language of Color

By Rosanne Bostonian | March 13, 2023

When I was a little girl my father, an artist, would ask “What color are the clouds?”  I would say “white” and he would smile.  This went on for years and I remember thinking how silly it was.  The clouds were obviously white!  I thought of it as our little endearing game.  When I was…
