I voted on November 2nd. I found myself voting against rather than voting for. The choices seemed uninspiring in their vindictive and classless attacks on each other. Where is the dignity?
If the available candidates are reflections of our society, we are in serious trouble. Maybe people have always been small minded, but they knew to present a version of appropriateness even if they were sneaking around behind the scenes. Some may say this is a step toward full disclosure and honesty, but if it is please fool me.
I want to think that a leader has a consciousness of vision and altruism that goes beyond ego and self-interest. I want to see an exemplary life. Is there such a thing?
We are all human and flawed, but if we have any self-awareness, we see our mistakes and we don’t justify them. We grow and supersede the limitations that created the character flaw. All too often in politics, the character flaws are magnified and celebrated.
The fiasco on January 6, 2021 was a close call. The boorish destruction of life and property were a slap across the face of democracy. I would like to know whose face to slap back. I think I have an inkling.
I went to the polling place, held my nose, and voted. I received a small sticker that said “I voted.” It didn’t say “I voted against, not for.” Sometimes we can only bob and weave through the mine fields and hope to emerge whole.
With love, Rosanne
