The Shelf Life of Culture

The shelf life of culture - Paul Revere Statue, Boston

Every social order seems to go through a process as if it’s a living being.  There is the birth, the life and ultimately the death.

New society is born of conflict with pre-existing ways that have caused separation and rebellion.  Our country was born in the sense of marginalization and unfairness by England.  “Give me liberty or give me death!!”  Or “taxation without representation is tyranny.”

With a sense of justice and the courage to support change, the new birth of America rose out of a desire for justice and principle.  Then there was abundance and success born of the willingness to sacrifice to create something different.

The next stage continued, still resonating with the energy of loyalty to principle.  It abided and thrived…

Until

We are in the “until” period in our country’s life span.  The principles of our forebearers have gradually evaporated as we forget the courage and sacrifice that gave birth to the success of America.  Now we are entitled, selfish and divided.  There is no central purpose, no caretakers of the precious values that gave rise to the abundant and principled America.

The last stage of a culture is division, selfishness and short sightedness.  It is characterized by personal gain, divisiveness and a lack of Oneness.  The adherence to objective principles is giving way to power grabbing.  The irony is that power comes from unity and the grabbing dissipates the Source that came through unity and righteousness.  It was after all “The UNITED States of America.”

Our America is in this place.  Our stewardship of hope and equality, of basic human rights, is disintegrating in the narcissistic power grab.  We are killing the Golden Goose and there will be no more “golden eggs.”  We have to awaken and NOW.

The transparency of this process is alarming, but predictable based on our wandering away from the message of the founding fathers.  Our labeling of truth as “fake news” further exposes the subjective nature of our delusions.

Let’s listen to the voice of “objectivity” and stop the twisting and turning of truth into personal gain.  There is no political party that is immune from the seduction.  We must be the force of allegiance to objectivity.

Lord, let it be so.

Easily Letting Go

The image of Mary holding the crucified body of her Son is a riveting metaphor. The Pieta sculpture is mesmerizing because it represents the ability to love that which appears hopelessly damaged. But the other side of the coin is Life Everlasting in the Resurrection.   I was thinking about our fragility and how worthy…

Who convinced us that we’re the superior species? And who said subjective thinking was all that and a bag of chips!? The Buddhists say that the thinking mind is most functional when it’s the servant of consciousness and does a really poor job when our thoughts rule us. Observing the rationale these days exhibited by…

The Shadow of Memories

By Rosanne Bostonian | December 27, 2023

I like Antiques Roadshow, except when an episode spontaneously appears in my closet. I have clothes from every size and stage of my life. This is partially because I hate clothes shopping. Whoever designed the fitting rooms with their obviously distorted mirrors and brassy lighting has a sadistic side. Don’t even start me on bathing…

Sitting with our Fears

By Rosanne Bostonian | November 14, 2023

As many of you are, I am a seeker of Truth as It expresses Itself in this world we mistakenly call reality. That was a mouthful! What I know from studies in psychology and spiritual study is that layers of what we think we know, what we think is “me” gradually peel off and leave…

For Love of Teaching

By Rosanne Bostonian | September 10, 2023

I remember being in the back of a classroom as a student teacher. I watched the master teacher while looking at the backs of my students. When it was my turn to step up to the podium, it was a shock. They were all looking at me. They were waiting and nothing would happen until…

For the Love of Life (Just as it Is)

By Rosanne Bostonian | July 5, 2023

We humans have a conditional love of Life. We love Life when nice things are happening. We love Life when we are showered with our hearts’ desires. We seem to believe that we are entitled to Life as WE define it, without hurts, troubles, mistakes and other unpleasant “surprises.” When Life deals out its challenges,…

Religious v. Spiritual

By Rosanne Bostonian | May 23, 2023

I’ve been asked a number of times about the difference between religion and spirituality.  Since there are increasing numbers of people that claim to be spiritual, but not religious, it’s a valid question. The way I think about this is that religion is a road map, a set of directions that keeps us on course,…

Mystery Abounds

By Rosanne Bostonian | May 7, 2023

There is nothing new in the world, just the echo of wisdom stated and restated in a variety of traditions and languages. What is there about our thinking brains that prevents us from yielding to truths greater than those known in our very small, individual lives? No doubt that what we see and hear enters…

That’s the way life is, so that’s the way I am

By Rosanne Bostonian | April 24, 2023

With our big brains and learning capacities, we figure out the way life is. Once we’ve established the way life is, we attribute our feelings, our relationships, and our sensibilities accordingly. There is a surrender to the way life was and it automatically becomes the way life is and will always be.  A simpler…

The Language of Color

By Rosanne Bostonian | March 13, 2023

When I was a little girl my father, an artist, would ask “What color are the clouds?”  I would say “white” and he would smile.  This went on for years and I remember thinking how silly it was.  The clouds were obviously white!  I thought of it as our little endearing game.  When I was…
